BUSY MONTH FOR NY TOURNAMENTS

June is a big month for tournaments here on the Island, with at least a half dozen shark tournaments on the calendar, including two of the region’s biggest shark events. Several striped bass and fluke contests and a surf event round out the month’s tourney schedule.

The first shark tournament of the season is the relatively new 5th Annual Point Lookout Shark Tournament with fishing days scheduled for Friday, June 9 and Saturday, June 10. Sunday, June 11 is a weather day. The captain’s meeting takes place 6 p.m. this Thursday, June 8, at Scotty’s Fishing Station/The Buoy Bar in Point Lookout. The entry fee is $450 per boat, with prizes for first, second and third place, and optional Calcuttas. It’s a mako/thresher only event with a 100-pound minimum. Two of the region’s biggest shark tourneys are slated for the same weekend. The 31st Annual Star Island Shark Tournament takes place June 16 and 17, with anglers vying for over $500,000 in prize money. The captain’s meeting takes place 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 15. Entry fee is $1,250 per boat. Dockage is available on a first-come, first-serve basis at $6 per foot. Per Environmental Conservation Law, all participants must use non-stainless steel, non-offset circle hooks exclusively. The 45th Annual Freeport Hudson Anglers Shark Tournament which draws hundreds of boats is slated for Saturday, June 17th. Previous years have seen over $225,000 in cash and prizes awarded. The entry fee is $350 per boat. The tournament weigh-in minimum for all sharks is 150 pounds, except for blue sharks, which must weigh at least 200 pounds. One shark per boat will be eligible for prizes. A mandatory captain’s meeting takes place 7 p.m. Friday, June 16th, at the Town of Hempstead Guy Lombardo Marina in Freeport. Two more shark tournaments are slated for the same weekend. The Staten Island Tuna Club Shark Tournament takes place on Saturday, June 17th with makos and threshers the targeted species. Also slated for June 17 is the 43rd Annual Moriches Anglers Shark Tournament, with a rain date of June 18. A captains meeting takes place 7 p.m. Friday, June 16 at the VFW Hall, 437 Montauk Highway, Center Moriches. The entry fee is $300 per boat. The last weekend of the month features another pair of shark events. The annual Woodcleft Fishing Station Shark Tournament takes place on Saturday, June 24. The entry fee is $300 and includes four cans of chum. All entry fees collected go to winners with 70 percent to first place and 30 percent to second place. An optional Calcutta is available. The Great Gun Anglers Shark Tournament runs Saturday and Sunday, June 24 and 25 out of the Union Avenue Dock in Center Moriches. The entry fee is $300 per boat and there is an optional Calcutta. For those who favor the inshore scene, you can choose from several bass and fluke tournaments this month. The Suffolk Marine Anglers Spring Striped Bass Tournament, based out of the Babylon Village Dock, is slated for Sunday, June 11th. Boundaries are Moriches Inlet to East Rockaway (Debs) Inlet and weigh-in is by 3:30 p.m. Last year saw more than $20,000 in prize money distributed to participants. The tournament benefits the Hospice Care Network. There is a catch and release category sponsored by The Fisherman, a slot fish category, Calcutta bluefish category and a mystery fish prize. The captains meeting is at Miller’s Ale House in Deer Park on Thursday, June 8th at 7:30 p.m. The entry fee is $225 per boat. Thousands of dollars in prizes from local and national sponsors will be raffled off at the meeting along with a Chinese auction. June sees the first of a handful of summer fluke contests, beginning with the Molnar’s Landing Early Fluke Shootout on Saturday, June 17th. The captains’ meeting takes place Friday, June 16, 7:30 p.m.at Molnar’s Landing in Hampton Bays. The Senior Division entry fee is $50 per angler; Junior Division entry fee is $25. Far and away the biggest fluke tournament on the Island is the 23rd Annual Duke of Fluke Tournament hosted by Comb’s Bait & Tackle in Amityville. It takes place on Sunday, June 25th. The awards ceremony and weigh-in take place at Amity Beach. Adult entry fee is $35. Ages 12 and under is $15. Cash prizes for 1st to 5th place. Prizes for 6th through 23rd place. 23rd place wins a $200 Combs Gift Certificate. An optional Calcutta is $25 per boat. Free Combs Terminator for the first 100 to sign up. If fishing the beach or shore is your game, check out the Showdown at the Shore, hosted by Jones Beach Fishing Station. Fishing from noon Friday, June 16 until noon Sunday, June 18, with cash or tackle prizes for the three largest striped bass, fluke and bluefish. Fishing is limited to shore only.
