The Friends of Caleb Smith Preserve are hosting their 17th Annual Junior Angler Catch & Release Tournament on Saturday, June 8 at the preserve. This is a rain or shine event. The tournament is divided into two age groups: Youngsters from 5 to 8 years of age can begin signing in at 9:15 a.m. Fishing is from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Youngsters from 9 to 12 years old can begin signing up at 12:15 p.m.. Fishing for them will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. There will be three prizes awarded to each age group. There will be a limited number of rods available but children are encouraged to bring their own rod and reel. Worms, hooks, bobbers and beverages will be provided. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
The entry fee for children whose family are members of Friends of Caleb Smith Preserve is $10. The fee for non-members is $15. Each child receives a free T-shirt and a goody bag. All youngsters must be registered by June 1 and entry fee must be paid by then. Checks should be made payable to Friends of Caleb Smith Preserve and mailed to Caleb Smith State Park, PO Box 963, Smithtown, NY 11787. Include the youngster’s name and age, parent’s name, address, phone number, Email, T-shirt size and whether the child will need a rod and reel. An $8 state parking fee will be in effect, or you can use an Empire Pass.
