A call to Justin over at Allens Dock got us an up beat report. He said the rains finally stopped and the Mullica and other tidal streams are seeing some good white perch and crappie fishing in their freshwater sections which are further down because of the mid-month rains. Look for the fishing in the tidal streams to continue into June. The pickerel fishing should also continue to be good in June thanks to the extra water in the near by cedar bogs and lakes. Lastly he said the bass fishing in the local lakes and ponds and campground lakes usually heats up in June, as well.

Shedders are in so the weakfish should soon follow according to Justin with Allen’s Dock. We have heard of a couple weakies along the mouth of the river, but no steady action as of yet. Most anglers are focused on flounder action in the bay which has been good with fish up to 6-pounds weighed in recently. The bay is also giving up drum to 20-pounds for anglers fishing clam baits. Stripers are also feeding in the bay, with one angler catching an “over” on a live eel, and more interesting was that this fish regurgitated a whole croaker. Bluefish have been spotty with anglers mostly catching them as bycatch, including a longtime shop customer who got a 24-inch fish on a perch rig.

Another place we got a good report on the freshwater fishing was at Allens Dock where Justin told us the recent rains has put more freshwater in the tidal streams and cedar bogs and lakes. This has changed the salt line in the creeks and bass, crappies, panfish and catfish are being caught farther down in the streams. Pickerel fishing has been excellent and the shop has been selling plenty of killies to anglers to live line for the chainsides. In all it was a good week of fishing, Justin said.

Slipholders found lots of stripers in the Mullica River this week according to Justin with Allen’s Dock. Many of these fish were in the “schoolie” size class and caught on soft plastics. A few keepers hit the scales this week as well, plus there was a whisper that some really large fish had also moved into the river. Anglers who targeted flounder this week found some keepers in the bay with live minnows being the preferred bait right now.
