Allen's Dock

Pickerel and white perch was the word from Justin over at Allens Dock. Most of the pickerel fishing has been in the nearby cedar waters and the upper part of Bass River. In addition he mentioned that the perch are slowly moving higher up in the river making them easier for anglers to catch. He ended his report by saying he is finally getting most of the boats at his place in the water after a lot of weather delays.

Justin at Allen’s Dock summed up this week’s striper bite simply as “excellent”. He says the best bait to use right now is live eels while bloodworm and clams are tied for second place, and some anglers are scoring on the troll and by throwing lures. But live eels are the key to putting lots of big fish on deck and these anglers are reporting “having the time of their life” right now. Drum action has been a little slow compared to last year, but that could be because there are just so many stripers around competing for baits. White perch are way up the river and in the creeks, and probably won’t make their way back down until the larger stripers move out. Customers report that pre-season flounder fishing has been good with some very nice size fish already, so the opening week should be off to a fast start. Justin has plenty of live minnows in his tanks ready to tempt the first flounder of the season. Lastly, he says that anglers are seeing crabs starting to steal their baits while at the same time other customers are coming in for crabbing supplies, so this might be the week when the crabbing really takes off.

Pickerel and perch were the story when we spoke with Justin over at Allen’s Dock on Bass River. He told us there has been no let up in the very good pickerel fishing hopefully it will remain good in May. Perch have started to move into the tidal waters and are serving up some good fishing on small jig combinations. He ended his report by saying dry weather has kept a lot of fishing and other activities in check in the last few years, so let’s hope that isn’t the case this year in May.

Justin at Allen's Dock tells us that the best way to describe the current fishing situation is “lights out”. There are simply “tons” of stripers in the Mullica River, in Great Bay and along the inlet. It has been one of the best spring runs in recent memory, especially for big fish. Bloodworms, eels and clams are all working on these fish with the largest fish coming in the early morning hours. Anglers fishing at night with soft plastics report good action on schoolie size fish on the outgoing tides. Black drum have been missing in the bay so far this spring, but with anglers switching out bloodworms for clam baits, the drum will surely be caught during the month of May.

ABOUT ALLEN’S DOCK Established 1923 The lure of Allen’s Dock starts with a man named Chet Allen. Chet built Allen’s Dock in 1923. Chet was married to Belle Valiant, the son of George Valiant. George was a menhaden boat captain for the McKeever Brothers. The McKeever Brothers owned the fish factory on Crab Island between 1910 and 1926. Along with the fish factory, the McKeever brothers also owned the property we all know as Allen’s Dock. The McKeever Brothers sold the property to George and though it may be cliché to say it - the rest is history… and what a history! A menhaden, commonly called a “bunker” around here, and through the years, there has been a lot of fish called “bunker,” and a few men called “George!” As of December of 2021, George Kurtz became the most recent of a long list of New Gretna history. George purchased the dock from George McGeoch, who took over for his father over 40 years ago. Before George, there was Ruby McAnney. Rube acquired Allen’s Dock after the passing of his friend, Chet Allen. Chet considered Ruby his right hand man and left Ruby the marina under the condition that it would always be called “Allen’s Dock.” Join us as we pay homage to this piece of bunker bait history!
