Bayonne Bait and Tackle

Our first reports on the striped bass fishing in the northern portion of the state came from Chris over at Bayonne Bait and Tackle whole told us October has been a decent month week of fishing for linesiders in the back bay waters including the Shrewsbury and Navesink rivers, as well as outside on the Shrewsbury Rocks. Blackfishing is also starting to pick up, but that comes with a caveat, and that’s when you can get green crabs. Chris told me most bait suppliers are limiting the amount of green crabs they will sell you so that most shops will have greens. As a result shops sell out quickly after they get a delivery. That is something tackle shops have no control over. He advises that you call the shop ahead to make sure they have green crabs in stock.

Striped bass was at the top of the list when we spoke to Chris over at Bayonne Bait and Tackle for our first report of the week. He said most of the bass being taken in the backwaters of Bayonne are very big fish along with a few schoolies and small bluefish. He also said the one thing that has been missing is the bunker. Since the storm bunker has been hard to get and bunker boats have had to travel far to get them. Green crabs have also been a problem getting. Chris said he has eels and most other baits and advises anglers to call the shop it they are looking for bunker of greens.
