Salted clams, fresh clams it doesn’t matter as scores and scores of stripers and black drum are loaded up on the Sea Isle beaches said Cam at Boulevard Bait and Tackle. Bass are larger model fish in the high 30s and low 40-inch range while black drum are running up to about 25 pounds. Fluke are congregating more toward the inlets and bucktail land Gulp combos are working best. Its been the best spring run of surf stripers in Sea Isle in recent memory.

Cameron at Boulevard Bait & Tackle reports another “solid” striper bite this week from the beach. While we were talking Sunday morning, Greg O’Driscal was in the shop showing a picture of the 51-inch fish that he caught from the surf. In general, the fish ranged from slot keepers to fish just over 48 inches on salted and fresh clams. Soaking the clam baits also produced several nice black drum to 38 inches. In the back bays, the reports were mixed for the opening week of flounder season. Some anglers found a quick limit of fish to 22 inches, others had to cull through two dozen short fish to come up with a couple of keepers, and other anglers reported just a couple of bites. One customer who only reported “a couple of bites” did manage one fish which tipped the scales at over 6 pounds. Bycatches included some blues and weakfish for the anglers that were targeting flounder with strip baits.

“Completely epic” said Cam of Boulevard Bait and Tackle in Sea Isle City about the non-stop striper and black drum feed going on off the Sea Isle shores. It’s been one of the best spring runs for the area ever to occur with scores of huge bass over 43 inches along with regular overslot and slot fish and with the full moon, smaller black drum of 10 to 25 pounds also moved in.

“Ant, shop is busy, fishing is off the charts” is how Cameron from Boulevard Bait & Tackle started out our conversation on Sunday. The number of stripers being caught from the surf and inlet is astounding. Fish from keepers to fish over 45 inches were caught this week and the top bait has been surf clam. The surf clam is also getting the attention of black drum and this week saw weigh-ins to almost 20 pounds. Best tide has been outgoing right through the dead low. Cam had a couple of customers scouting the bays for flounder and they report “knocking the socks off of them” in the shallow water sound holes. The shop has everything for a successful opening week of flounder fishing including live minnows, hand cut salmon bellies and all the tackle you could want. Lastly, Cam tells us that a few bluefish showed up this week, not in huge numbers but the ones that were caught were monsters.
