Breachway Bait and Tackle

Declan at Breachway Bait and Tackle said that the storm this past week provided opportunities for surfcasters to score some nice bass from the breachways and beaches. Some big bass were landed and there has been a recent increase in smaller bass in the 12- to 25-inch range which is great to see. Fluke reports have been improving and there were some nice fish caught this past week including a 12-pounder that was weighed in at the shop. Fishing for black sea bass continues to produce well and there are good number of nice sized scup around. Offshore, anglers are still waiting for the recreational bluefin bite to really take off. There have been some fish caught but the bite has been very inconsistent. Hopefully we will see more fish moving into the area soon and a solid late summer and fall fishery

Declan at Breachway Bait and Tackle reported that fluke fishing continues to improve along the south shore with more keeper sized fish moving into the area. Expect to still catch a good number of short fish but the keeper to short ratio is improving. The most consistent fishing seems to be happening on 30- to 55-feet of water. Customers are also reporting finding a good number of keeper sea bass, and plenty of shorts off the beaches. You can target sea bass around deeper pieces of structure and larger jigs are a great way to try and target the larger sized keepers, but fluke anglers often catch a few keeper sea bass just drifting along sandy bottom. Striped bass reports were a bit slower this past week and the fish seem to be settling to their usual summer haunts. Live bait and large soft plastics fished along the bottom are producing most of the larger bass while trolling umbrella rigs or fishing metal jigs is working well for slot sized fish. Bluefin tuna were tough to find on the inshore grounds this past week but there is plenty of bait and marine life out there and the occasional tuna is being caught. Hopefully we will see a larger body of fish move into the area in the weeks ahead.
