At Canal Bait & Tackle there hadn’t been much talk about mackerel since the weather went arctic, but that plunge in temperature, gave local anglers the rare chance to ice fish on certain Cape ponds. The smaller and shallower the pond the better, it seemed, with bass and pickerel being the most common targets, some trout were also caught. Warmer temps on Monday may have weakened the ice, but a return to colder temps later in the week may give Cape fishermen a curtain call on ice.

At Canal Bait & Tackle word was that there were still some mackerel around the east end as of midweek, so there’s probably still a few around. Freshwater guys have been mostly chasing trout at places like Long Pond, Peter’s Pond and Hamblin Pond. It’s been a slower week with the holiday, but guys are still getting it done.
