Rick in Milford thought last week was kind of slow, but he still had a few reports of decent fishing. Two kayakers working Nipmuc Pond in Mendon logged a bunch of largemouths and yellow perch on plastic worms and Baby Torpedoes, and a couple of kids probing North Pond (Lake Maspenock) in Hopkinton came up with some nice largies including a 3-pounder. Rick’s buddy, Mike Piver, won a tournament at Whitehall Reservoir with 13 pounds of bass which included the tourney lunker 5-pound largemouth. Rick also talked about the bass tournament at Manchaug Pond The winner of that contest weighed-in a whopping five-bass total of 26 pounds—an average of 5.25 pounds per fish. The lunkers were stacked up on a deep weed line. Also caught during the event were largies scaling 7.25 pounds and 6 pounds, 11 ounces.

Rick in Milford had a notebook full of reports. Among the most newsworthy were the following: Danny Southwick logged two more lunker largemouths, a 5-pound, 13-ouncer on a plastic frog and a 5-pounder on a buzzbait, both at an undisclosed pond in Rhode Island; Connor, the young angler whose name appears often in this column, scored a bunch of largemouths (none big) at Lackey Dam and Whitings Pond; and Stevie Janik—another report regular—had 15- and 17-inch smallmouths at Quabbin and several nice largemouths elsewhere including a 3-pounder at Walker Pond, a 3.5-pounder at Meadow Pond, and a 4-pound, 2-ouncer and 5-pound, 5-ouncer at an unknown venue. Andy, one of many young anglers who gives reports to Rick, bagged a load of crappies at Hopkinton Reservoir, and Ray, another Hopkinton Reservoir regular, continued catching trout at his favorite spot near the dam. Ray usually uses PowerBait and worms; but this time, after discovering plastic worms in the stomachs of several trout, he offered pieces of Berkley worms which the stockies readily accepted.
