Maco's Bait and Tackle

Larry from Maco’s Bait & Tackle said the canal gang arrived at the Maritime early and cast for four or five hours before taking a break and shortly thereafter the bass came to the surface in a flurry of action. Pencils, poppers and jigs were taking fish that were almost all well over 35 and many to 40-plus inches. The west end of Buzzards Bay has been giving up some good tautog and black sea bass fishing and they have all the bait and rigs you need to score.

The word from Tony at Maco’s Bait & Tackle was of a slow start to the day as the winds have killed all boat traffic and not many customers were fishing on that gusty and pouring day. The canal has been giving up some good sized bass all week long for chunkers and guys working jigs. There were bones and some blues in the canal but they were tough to relocate once they moved through. Tony said it was usually the first week of October when the big blues arrived at the west end and hung around until they had busted or ate all the local baitfish. All in all it was a pretty good week in the canal despite the weather. Tony had previously recommended the smaller white version of the Guppy lures they sell and one of them bailed me out recently when none of the fish we were casting to would commit to hitting my other plugs. Locally made in Plymouth those little lures out fished the smaller Doc’s and surface poppers we were using.
