Maco's Bait and Tackle

Our friend Tony at Maco’s Bait & Tackle said it was a busy weekend with more than the usual number of regular customers getting ready for the last fishing holiday of the summer. The canal has picked up again with blitz action on small fish during the day and some 40-inch fish being taken on chunks. There have been scattered reports of albies in western Buzzards Bay and along the west Falmouth shoreline to Woods Hole. Other anglers report seeing them porpoising but not being able to get them to hit. Larry was staring at a 500-pound delivery of fresh sea clams he has to sort and put into containers. Stop in and get your fresh bait, live eels and directions to where the action is.

We spoke Tony at Maco’s Bait & Tackle who said the change in the weather has been breathing some life into the canal. There have been a few days when schoolies were taken on top and a few bigger fish were taken on jigs and chunks. There are five species of bait in the canal and they are moving up and down with the tides. There are 4- to 6-pound blues in the canal feeding on the silversides and juvenile herring with stripers occasionally chasing this bait. Plugs, metals and a few guys did well tossing SP Minnows. There are now more legal fluke coming in from the Mashnee Flats and some tog from the rip rap in the canal. One customer saw and hooked a few albies in the Plymouth area and another angler saw some pushing bait along the Elizabeths.
