I checked with Don at Ramsey Outdoors in Succasunna and he also told us of decent trout fishing in the northern streams with good reports coming from the Rockaway, Pequest, Ramapo and Musconetcong. In addition he said he also got better reports on the bass and crappie fishing in the local lakes and ponds. We also talked to Andrew over at the store in Ramsey and he too said he got good reports on the trout fishing in the northern streams and said he is also getting reports to decent afternoon fly hatches in the streams since the water temps got a boost from the recent warm weather. In addition he told us some of the reservoirs like Splitrock and Spruce Run are still very low and while fishing in them is good the reservoirs are filling up very slowly, he said.

A call to Don over at Ramsey Outdoors in Succasunna got us another good report on the striped bass in northern waters. Don said tackle sales at the store switched from trout fishing to striped bass fishing and some anglers also were looking at fluke gear with that season about to open back up. Decent catches of party boats, charter boats, private boats and by shoreline fishermen were heard. Over at the store in Ramsey Andrew had a similar story. He said there seems to be a solid mix of stripers, shorts, keepers and some overs being caught on just about anything you put in front of them when they turn on. If you were looking for the bigger fish live-lining bunker seemed to take the biggest fish. However trolling also accounted for some nice fish and casting plugs, tin and jig-plasticbait combinations put anglers into some good numbers.

“The month of April saw some good trout fishing in the northern streams thanks to the rainfall we got in April,” said Don from the Ramsey Outdoors in Succasunna. Don told us said they got good reports from the Ramapo, Wanaque, Pequest, Musconetcong and Flat Brook. In addition he mentioned some good crappie, bass and panfish catches coming from local small ponds and lakes. “May is setting up to see these fisheries continue barring any severe weather problems,” he added. Andrew over at the Ramsey store echoed the good trout fishing reports we got from other sources in the north and said water conditions in the streams are at very good levels. “Hopefully we will see these good water levels continue in May,” he said. He also mentioned some walleye being caught in Lake Hopatcong, Greenwood and Monksville and some good smallmouth fishing in some of the northern reservoirs.

April was an interesting month for Don and crew over at Ramsey Outdoors in Succasunna. Had it not been for the successive storms and gale force winds the schools of striped bass that wintered over off DELMARVA that were moving up the coast quickly would not have been stopped in their tracks and delayed for a couple of weeks and fishing would have exploded earlier. A lot more boats would have been in the water earlier as well. Now that that is in the rearview mirror it looks like May will be the best striped bass fishing of the spring. Over at the Ramsey store Andrew agreed and said we can only hope the weather does not do us another dirty turn in May. Because every indication shows one of the best run of stripers are now moving into our waters.
