The word from Don over at Ramsey Outdoors in Succasunna was high waters on opening day spread the fish out in most streams. He said most of the better fishing was later in the week when the waters went back down to more fishable level. The Ramapo, Rockaway, Pequest and Flat Brook rounded out the top streams for anglers stopping in the store this last week he said. Don also mentioned some decent catches of crappies and bass being reported in the lakes and ponds in the local area late in the week. I also checked with Andrew over at the Ramsey store and he also told me that the trout fishing has been picky in most streams because of the high water. Most veteran fishermen are telling of having to work for the spread out fish with the smaller streams fishing better than the larger streams. The store also got decent reports on the bass and crappie fishing in Lake Hopatcong and Greenwood lakes.

A call to Ramsey Outdoors in Succasunna got us news of a mixed size bass giving anglers fishing Raritan Bay and surrounding waters some hit or miss early week action. Don said the store saw quite a few anglers on Saturday and most were looking for striped bass gear. Here too the word was some decent bottom fishing was seen this past week when conditions were favorable, Ling, cod and mixed size tog were supplying the action we were told. I also gave Andrew at the Ramsey store a call and he too said reports on the fishing got getter as the week progressed until Thursday night and Friday morning. The striped bass fishing was slowly coming back and hopefully the fishing will improve this coming week. Tog fishing was picky but improving and should also pick up this coming week as well.

I got a nice laugh from Don over at Ramsey Outdoors in Succasunna when I asked him how the fishing was this past week. He said it goes without saying that crowds were light on Saturdays opener on many waters. He did mention that some of the locals were fishing the small lakes and ponds in the area and picking up some crappies, pickerel and bass on live bait. I also checked with Andrew over at the Ramsey store and he to us most streams were in poor shape on Saturday. The better reports came from the small lakes and ponds that were stocked, which even though the water was dirty, still produced fish, as well as some of the out of the way spring fed small streams that clean up faster.

Over at Ramsey Outdoors in Succasunna Don said if it didnt stop raining he was going to build and ark. Striped bass fever had overtaken a lot of the stores regulars who were itching to get back on the water and tangle with the bass. The one thing the lousy weather was good for was the foul weather gear department which was doing a land office business in rain suits. Over at the Ramsey store Andrew said he was surprised at the number of big bass that were being caught in between the weather spasms. He told us the store heard rumors of big bass being caught amid state once the blow settled down and said that was just more proof that the stripers have taken up residence farther up the coast. As of the weekend reports on the tog fishing were scarce as very few boats ventured out in the poor sea and weather conditions. Hopefully things will improve this coming week he said.
