AJ at Red Top Sporting Goods in Buzzards Bay. Cape told us that lots of local anglers are switching to saltwater species. That means anyone sticking with freshwater fishing can have for themselves the huge supply of trout still finning in ponds on and just off Cape Cod. All stocked waters are loaded with stockies, including holdovers, and producing well, so just pick one from the online stocking list and enjoy the action. If you need help choosing a spot, AJ suggested Long Pond and Fearing Pond in Plymouth and Peters Pond in Sandwich. Bass activity is a bit slow but improving steadily. Bass are not yet on beds, but they are in shallow water (4 feet or less) and will be bedding soon. AJ again recommended for bass any pond with a herring run such as Great Herring Pond in Plymouth/Bourne and Big Sandy Pond in Plymouth, both of which offer largemouths and smallmouths.

AJ at Red Top Sporting Goods finally took a day off and was fishing with friends in mid to upper Buzzards where stripers from slots to jumbos were breaking on bait and providing great sport for anyone out there this weekend. The tautog fishing has been very good and getting better around the canal openings, the West Falmouth shoreline and the area in and around Cleveland Light. The freshwater fishing has not missed a beat as the big trout and largemouth have been providing plenty of action in most stocked waters. The canal has been very active all week since the arrival of the first stripers last week with fish to 40-inches in the west end and the area of the herring run. Word is there are a few big macks in the east end and a few squid have been taken.

Trout fishing on and just off the Cape Cod is “lights out” according to A. J. at Red Top Sporting Goods in Buzzards Bay. Cape ponds are being continuously refilled with brook, brown, rainbow, and tiger trout, and everyone’s catching them. Some have been very nice fish like the 2-pound, 3-ounce tiger taken on PowerBait at Fearing Pond in Plymouth. The big brook x brown hybrid earned a bronze pin in the state’s freshwater sportfishing awards program. A. J. added that Red Top has weighed-in at least a half-dozen “pinfish” so far this season including a few big bluegills and crappies. (A pinfish is a fish that qualifies for a bronze commemorative pin in the freshwater sportfishing awards program.) He also mentioned that bass fishing is heating up. Best bet for connecting with a big largemouth is to select a pond with a herring run such as Agawam Mill Pond, a 145-acre impoundment on the Agawam River in Wareham, or 376-acre Great Herring Pond in Plymouth/Bourne. For trout, pick any stocked pond or lake. Long Pond in Plymouth and Peters Pond in Sandwich are premier trout factories.

The stripers just arrived at the canal herring run and its game on for the many anglers who call the Ditch their home waters. AJ at Red Top Sporting Goods said there are not just schoolies in the canal but over slot fish were caught and released on Friday and another informant said they went for dinner but stopped by the canal to check out the scene. Fish were breaking just off the run so dinner was postponed for a few hours. Green crabs are a hot item with the entirety of Buzzards Bay and all its ledges and rockpiles providing a bite that is improving daily. Bone colored swimmers were the ticket to the bigger bass which were keyed in on the herring. Customers were reporting that bass were feeding on pogies in the bays harbors and there were several top water bites we were informed about. A few more guys began catching tog in the east end off the Scusset pier and there were unconfirmed reports of macks near the fairway buoy in the east end. The freshwater fishing is still in high gear with bass and trout bait heading out the door to local ponds where some great fishing awaits anyone not afraid to get their feet wet.
