Captain TJ Karbowksi at Rock and Roll Charters said they’re enjoying some consistent late-summer action for scup and bluefish with some sea bass, stripers and the occasional fluke in the mix. Scup fishing is “off the charts”. He said not only are they around in numbers, but if you’re willing to move around you can find areas covered up in jumbos. When they find these pockets of big fish, they are seeing lots of 17- to 18-inch fish. Bluefish action has been solid. There are good numbers around, unfortunately they are running on the smaller size so far this season. There is tons and tons of tiny bait around and they are seeing it in clouds on the sonar and dimpling on the surface. There are a few stripers around but you’ll have to work to find them. Sea bass fishing ticked up in the area over the last week or so. They have plenty of them around, the chore is picking through the shorts to find keepers. They’ve had some fluke mixed in while targeting sea bass and scup and this week they landed a corker 26-inch flatfish. Summer fishing is here for a few more weeks and now’s the time to book a trip. The biggest change in the last couple of weeks has been the departure of striped bass from the area. While the linesides have been incognito, bluefish have filled in and made for fun fights and sore arms for his crews. The blues are around in good numbers but you may have to move around a bit to find them. They are seeing mostly mid-sized blues with the occasional chopper mixed in. There aren’t a lot of bait options around at the moment, but what they do have is there in abundance. Giant schools of tiny rain bait can be seen on the screen and the surface throughout the area. Bottom fishing is good. Scup in particular are around in both number and size. Finding the porgies isn’t so much of a problem but if you are looking for jumbos, take some time to move around and you may encounter pockets of hubcaps in the 17- to 18-inch class.
