Matt at Snug Harbor Marina said that the striper bite along the beaches was a bit slow this past week due primarily to rough seas and dirty water. As conditions improve out front the bite should pick right back up. The rivers and salt ponds fished well for bass and there were some worm hatches taking place in the afternoons. Bass fishing is also starting to heat up inside of the bay where larger bass are feeding on bunker and herring. Flutter spoons, soft plastics and topwaters are all producing well. A few tautog are being caught bit the bite still seems a bit slow with the water hovering at around 48 degrees. Fluke are starting to show along the beaches and out at the island. The south side of the island is probably the best bet right now for finding a few keepers. Squid are starting to show up around Newport and should be on the beaches soon.

Elisa at Snug Harbor Marina said that they had a great weekend seeing everyone that came in for the annual used tackle sale which was held this past weekend. Going forward, the shop will be open daily until 5 p.m. They will likely start opening at 8 a.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. on weekends and will adjust earlier as the season gets underway. Tautog reports are starting to pick up locally and out around Block Island with a few boats reporting multiple keepers this past week. Striped bass started to move in along the beaches and there have been reports of some larger bass and bunker up inside of the bay. Squid fishing has been slow so far this season, but they should start to show up soon.
