Sports Port

Gary from The Sports Port said a rare opportunity for anglers to get out on the ice yielded a mad rush for shiners and resulted in the shop selling out of the little, slivery baitfish. Gary said it’s been mostly the smaller ponds and shady coves of larger waterbodies, but the fishing has been very good. A few guys had been out on Wequaket and others were able to get on the cove at Peters, among others. They heard good results from pickerel, bass, trout and perch. Jiggers were doing well with micro soft plastics fishing for bluegill, crappie and white perch as well.

Gary from The Sports Port said the weather really dictates angler participation at this time of year. If it’s cold and windy, no one goes. If it’s warmer, they’ll see a few guys coming in for shiners and hear a few reports. Most guys are trout fishing and most of those that go seem to catch a few. Patience is especially key during January and February. An inflated nightcrawler, floated off the bottom is a great way to catch winter trout.
