Watch Hill Outfitters

Mike Wade at Watch Hill Outfitters heard a few reports from customers of striped bass showing up along the beaches and in the breachways this past week. These seem to be migratory fish and ranged in size from schoolies on up to fish there were around 20 pounds. Tautog reports haven’t really started to pick up yet but as soon as the water warms up a couple of degrees the bite should turn on. A few customers have been doing well targeting winter flounder. There are still a lot of herring in the river along with holdover striped bass. No local reports for squid yet and it’s a bit early still for them off of the beaches but they should start showing up around Newport soon.

Mike Wade at Watch Hill Outfitters said that things were a little slow this past week around the shop primary due to the weather. There have been a few good reports from anglers targeting winter flounder and striped bass. Herring continue to run upriver to spawn. Water temperatures out front is still relatedly low ranging from mid to high 40 degrees. As soon as temperatures start to reach 50 degrees on a consistent basis the tautog fishing should start to pick up. Commercial boats have been finding squid south of Block Island so they should start moving in along the beaches in a few weeks. Quite a few anglers were out for trout over the weekend and fishing was reported to be very good.
