GIANT THRESHERS RULE STAR ISLAND TOURNEY

Ben Mahler, general manager of Star Island Yacht Club and Marina, called it one of their best shark tournaments ever. He was referring to Star Island’s 25th Annual Mako, Thresher & Tuna Tournament held this past Friday and Saturday, August 4th and 5th. It was thresher sharks that stole the show, with 17 qualifying threshers weighed in by the 30 competing boats. Several boats recorded ten hookups, and one boat landed 17 sharks over the course of the two day event.

First place in the Thresher Shark Division went to the crew from the 21-foot Boston Whaler Outrage LUCKY DOG with a monster of 598 pounds. In second place with another giant whiptail was the charter boat JOY SEA with a 581 pounder. Third place was no slouch either as the crew from JANUSZ put a 347 pounder on the scale.

In the Mako Division, the JANUSZ crew was in the money again, taking first with a 154 pounder. Second place went to the crew of LUCKY DAWG with a 117 pounder, and right behind them was the REEL GAMES with a 115 pounder. The crew on SEA DUCED blew away the competition in the Tuna Division, sweeping all categories with a 177-pound big eye, a 69-pound yellowfin and a 67-pound yellowfin.
