If you enjoy sprinkling in a little competition with your fishing, June is your month and it doesn’t matter if your fishing is limited to the surf or your playground is the distant blue water. Striped bass, fluke, bluefish and sharks will be the targets this month, and there is still plenty of time to get in on the action. Here is a rundown of when and where it is all happening.
June 1-2: LIBBA Catch & Release Surf Fishing Contest; Takes place at Gilgo Beach for striped bass and bluefish. Open to LIBBA members in good standing. Fishing from 8 a.m. June 1 through noon on June 2. BBQ and awards ceremony on the beach at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. For rules go to www.libba.com. Prizes for three largest striped bass and bluefish. June 2: Suffolk Marine Anglers 10th Annual Striped Bass Tournament; Based at Babylon Village Dock. Shotgun start 6 a.m. from Village Dock. Boundaries from Moriches Inlet to East Rockaway (Debs) Inlet. Weigh-in by 3:30 p.m. Nearly $20,000 dollars in prize money in 2018. Benefits Hospice Care Network. Also catch and release category, slot fish category, Calcutta bluefish category and a mystery fish. Captains Meeting at Miller’s Ale House in Deer Park on Thursday, May 30th at 7:30 p.m. with thousands of dollars in prizes raffled off. June 30: 25th Annual Duke of Fluke Tournament; In Memory of Denise Witchey. Cash prizes go to the winners for 1st to 5th place and tackle prizes are awarded for 6th to 23rd place.
