At a state fishing advisory board meeting last spring, Long Island State Parks gave the okay for a designated kayak launch site in the southeast corner of Captree’s east parking lot. The designation required what turned out to be a lengthy rules change process to make it official, and that was completed this spring.
The site, now marked by a sign, provides easy access to the water and abundant parking. It is located just east of Captree Overlook. The distance from unloading your kayak to the water looked to be less than 50 feet during a recent visit.
Currents can run strong in this area so time your trips accordingly. High slack water here is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes after high tide at Fire Island Inlet. No permit is required to launch here, although a state 4-wheel drive or night fishing permit is required to park in the lot after sunset.
