SPOT Connect is a new SPOT satellite communicator capable of sending messages over the Globalstar satellite network from smartphone operating systems. Although today’s smartphones provide mobile social connection, when users go “off-grid”, their smartphone needs help. SPOT Connect provides connectivity to global communication satellites for sending location-based messages from around town or areas outside of cellular phone coverage. By simply downloading the SPOT Connect app, SPOT Connect wirelessly synchs via Bluetooth with smartphone operating systems like Android. SPOT message features are then initiated using the SPOT Connect app on the smart device. Urban professionals, outdoor enthusiasts and world travelers can now utilize cost-efficient, personal satellite communications directly from their smartphone. When paired with SPOT Connect, your everyday smartphone overcomes traditional limitations associated with cellular coverage, keeping you better connected to your personal contacts and social groups (Facebook and Twitter) when you want to be.
Additional features and benefits enable the user to use the GPS satellite system to determine location and the Globalstar satellite network to transmit that information to personal contacts or an international emergency response center; send custom “Type and Send” 41-character text messages from your location; provide GPS functionality to non-GPS devices; utilize proven SPOT messaging features like sending custom or predefined messages, Track Progress on Google Maps, or transmit an SOS message in an emergency; store up to 10 predefined messages for quick reference and sending; plus create and save contact groups to receive your SPOT Connect message. There is also an “on-device” SOS button on the SPOT Connect for standalone emergency operation, plus it is lightweight (only 3.7 ounces) and waterproof to IPX7 standards. The MSRP is $169.99 and subscription service plans start at $99.99 per year.
Also new for 2011 is the SPOT Hug, a satellite-based GPS security system for your boat. Not only will this new device protect your boat from theft and unauthorized use, it can also transmit a life-saving SOS function that notifies the GEOS International Emergency Rescue Coordination Center of your emergency location every five minutes. The key features of the SPOT Hug include an unauthorized movement detection alert that is automatically sent to the Asset Monitoring Center; the ability to receive a daily status message with your boat’s location and any sensor notifications; wireless keypad security and messaging system. Another benefit of the new HUG is that you can connect additional sensors onboard to monitor battery voltage, high water, door/hatch intrusion, smoke/fire, and more.
