THE FISHERMEN'S STORY MEMORIAL - The Fisherman

THE FISHERMEN’S STORY MEMORIAL

On January 11, 2012, Capt. Jimmy Mears was lost at sea in a tragic collision aboard the Mandy Ness shortly after departing the dock. Jimmy, a life-long commercial fisherman from Barnegat Light, NJ, was a loving father, son, brother, uncle and cherished friend. The loss of Jimmy has been felt by many and has brought on chatter that our town is lacking a memorial similar to those found in many fishing communities around the country.

In an attempt to honor and celebrate Jimmy’s life and the lives of all fishermen lost at sea from this area over the years, and to show our appreciation to all fishermen who risk their lives to bring us quality seafood, family members led by Capt. Jimmy’s sister Beth Schofield are in collaboration with Hanlon Sculpture Studio, LLC, to erect an educational memorial statue to be situated at the northern end of Barnegat Light.

In response to the numerous requests regarding donations from friends, community and vendors, they have established a non-profit, tax deductible fund to be utilized for this inspirational project. Donations are, of course, deeply appreciated and will assist in erecting the memorial that will be a beacon of enlightenment for many years to come. The target dedication date is July 2013.

Please make donation checks and money orders payable to the "Fishermen’s Story Memorial,” P.O. Box 388, Barnegat Light, NJ 08006, or visit fishermensmemorial.wordpress.com to donate with PayPal. You can also keep track of the statue’s progress and follow this project on Facebook or by searching "Fishermen’s Story Memorial Fund."
