Capt. Jack Sprengel discusses slow-pitch jigging techniques for striped bass and what makes a good slow-pitch jigging rod and reel. Slow-pitch jigging is a highly effective way to catch game fish as it provides a target of opportunity that triggers bites when other methods may not work. Slow-pitch jigs are designed to catch an edge and flutter down through the water column like a wounded bait fish. Sprengel explains how the action of the rod is specifically designed to impart action on the lure and the different lift techniques that he employs to get bit. Both jigging processes aim to lift the jig erratically and then let it fall and flutter. The lift-in-place approach is all about creating a slack in the line so that this jig flutters back on the way down. The quick handle-turn technique allows the jig to work up the water column a bit differently and can trigger bites (as seen in the video) as the jig falls back down to the bottom. When an angler gets bit using slow-pitch tackle, it’s essential to understand that the reel does most, if not all, of the work during the battle.
