2016 GATHERING OF ANGLERS - The Fisherman

2016 GATHERING OF ANGLERS

The Gathering of Anglers is a contest with the purpose of assembling Long Island’s best surf fishermen for a friendly weekend-long fishing contest, and to foster comaraderie and friendship between Long Island’s surf fishing clubs. All clubs active in the New York Surf Fishing Contest are eligible to participate. The Farragut Striper Club, last year’s winner of the cup, will be hosting the event this year.

This is a catch and release only format based on the honor system. Fish will be weighed on certified club scales and released. Each club will have a designated weighmaster who will record fish weighed by club members and tally the top five fish for participating members. Only bass and bluefish can be weighed for the contest using Interclub procedures and minimums (Blues: minimum 5 pounds – Bass: minimum 10 pounds). The top five fish for each club, either bass or bluefish, will count for total poundage. At least one striped bass must be submitted as part of the top five fish. The club with the most poundage wins the cup. Fishing begins at 6 p.m. Friday, October 7 and ends at 12 noon on Sunday, October 9.

An awards ceremony and barbecue will be held in the Montauk Point lower lot immediately following the close of the tournament. Each club is responsible for bringing its own food and beverages. There will be no prizes, charities or donations from any sponsors. The award is “bragging rights” only and the cup will be passed on to this year’s winning club. Clubs interested in participating in this year’s event should contact Ross Squire at rsquire@aol.com.
