ASMFC Meets This Week In Virginia

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) will hold its annual Summer Meeting from August 6 – 8 at the Westin Crystal City in Arlington, VA. This will be a hybrid meeting (both in-person and remote) to allow for participation by Commissioners and interested stakeholders.

On Tuesday, August 6, the Atlantic Herring Management Board will meet at 9 a.m., followed by the Atlantic Menhaden Management Board at 10 a.m. to review progress of the 2025 Ecological Reference Point Benchmark Stock Assessment and discuss possible Chesapeake Bay Management measures related to bunker.

Also on Tuesday at 1 p.m. the Atlantic Striped Bass Management Board will consider approval of Fishery Management Plan Review and State Compliance for the 2023 fishing season, while also reviewing recreational release mortality.  Other striped bass related topics on Tuesday afternoon include a 2024 Stock Assessment update with talk about any future management options to consider should the assessment indicate that further reduction is needed to reach the striped bass rebuilding goal.

On Wednesday, August 7 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. there is ASMFC consideration of Atlantic Cobia Addendum II pertaining to recreational allocation, harvest target evaluation, and measures setting.
