DAIWA J-BRAID X4 - The Fisherman

DAIWA J-BRAID X4

Daiwa’s J-Braid X4 is a line definitely worth a try the next time you’re looking to re-spool. Daiwa’s J-Braid X8 of course has been around for a while and has already earned broad acceptance among anglers in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. As an eight-strand braid, J-Braid X8 is a tough but smooth line that was introduced to the American market at a great value price (roughly $25 to $30 for a 330-yard spool).

Daiwa has since modified that Ultra Dyneema fiber construction by creating a separate four-strand version in the J-Braid X4. While it was officially unveiled in 2016, the line has been gaining acceptance throughout the region and is now available in Dark Green, Fluorescent Yellow and Island Blue. Reducing the strands or "carriers" from eight to four accomplishes several things; first, the X4 is stiffer than X8 which should reduce problems with wind knots, a big benefit to folks looking for a good braid for casting plugs and lures. That stiffness or coarseness also increases abrasion resistance for working around structure, and by design will reduce knot slippage. With fewer strands, the Daiwa J-Braid X4 also boasts a thinner surface diameter than the eight-strand version. Finally, for those who are price conscious on braids they expect to keep spooled up for awhile, the Daiwa J-Braid X4 is about the best value you will find the crowded braid market, coming in at a few dollars less per spool than the J-Braid X8.

Whether you’re looking for a 65- to 80-pound hi-vis yellow for offshore or dark green camouflage from 8- to 50-pound test for plugging up stripers and blues this fall, be sure to check out Daiwa J-Braid X4 at your local tackle shop.
