DEC Unveils New Five-Year Hudson Estuary Action Plan

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has released its Hudson River Estuary Action Agenda 2026-2030, a five-year plan outlining strategies to protect, restore and enhance the Hudson River estuary and its watershed.

The updated blueprint builds on previous conservation efforts while addressing emerging challenges such as climate change, habitat protection and environmental justice. Among its primary goals are maintaining healthy fish populations and clean water, improving the resilience of tributaries and shoreline communities, conserving priority natural areas, and expanding public access and engagement throughout the estuary.

The Action Agenda guides the work of DEC’s Hudson River Estuary Management Program, which includes the Hudson River Estuary Program, the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve, the Hudson and Delaware Marine Fisheries Unit, and the Marine Habitat Program. The initiative is supported through New York’s Environmental Protection Fund and implemented through restoration projects, research, education, grants and partnerships with state, federal and local organizations.
