As the school year winds down and the summer breezes settle in across New England, anglers looking for a reason to grab the rod and head out will find plenty of inspiration this month. The action kicks off in Massachusetts during the first full weekend of the month. On Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7, the Commonwealth is hosting its Free Freshwater Fishing Weekend. For these 48 hours, the usual requirement for a freshwater license is completely waived for residents and non-residents alike. From the quiet trout streams of the Berkshires to the expansive waters of the Quabbin Reservoir to the kettle ponds of the Cape, you can fish any public lake, pond, or river starting at 12 a.m. Saturday through 11:59 p.m. Sunday. It is an ideal window for families to introduce kids to the sport without the paperwork.
A few weeks later, the spotlight shifts south to Connecticut. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) has designated Saturday, June 21, as “Free Fishing License Day.” While Massachusetts focuses on freshwater, Connecticut’s offer is a bit broader: the free one-day license covers both inland rivers and saltwater along the Long Island Sound.
To participate in Connecticut, anyone 16 or older simply needs to snag a free one-day pass through the DEEP online sportsmen licensing system or at any local bait shop or vendor that carries licenses. If you have younger fishers in tow, those 15 and under never need a license in Connecticut, though DEEP encourages them to register for a “Youth Fishing Passport” to get involved in the state’s junior angler community.
While the fees are waived in both states, all regulations remain in effect. Anglers must still respect all catch limits, size restrictions, and specific gear regulations to stay with the law. So, pick your spot, stock your tackle box and take advantage of a few free fishing days this June.
