This Saturday, April 9 at 8 a.m. trout fishermen throughout New Jersey will once again get their lines wet for the opening day of the 2022 trout season, with a daily limit of six trout at 9 inches minimum size on most trout waters. According to the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife, roughly 250,000 trout will be distributed up until the opener on streams, ponds and lakes throughout New Jersey.
For kids at the Jersey Shore, there’s no better place to be this Saturday then out at Spring Lake in Monmouth County for the Shark River Surf Anglers (SRSA) Opening Day Trout Tournament for kids 15 and under. There are four age divisions, 5 and under, ages 6 to 9, ages 10 to 12 and teens from 13 to 15. Prizes will be presented for first, second and third place in each division, with one grand prize trophy, a rod and reel, and a taxidermist’s mounting of the winning catch awarded to the one young angler who lands the largest trout of the contest.
All children weighing-in a trout are eligible to receive a special prize, while those who do not will still take home a bag of goodies. How’s it work? Fish at Spring Lake and catch a trout during contest hours. Bring it to the big white tent at Mercer Avenue to weigh and register it! Trout must be caught from Spring Lake to be eligible (and no snagged trout!)
The contest is presented and staffed by SRSA volunteers, and is open to all children 15 years old and under. Stop by the tent throughout the day for free food, bait, and fishing guidance. Prizes will be awarded at the club’s tent at 2 p.m. on Saturday, and winners must attend the ceremony to claim prizes!
