On January 25th, the Long Island fishing community lost Raymond Curiale. Known as Ray to most or Captain Ray to others who sailed with him on the King Cod VII, which he was part owner of with well-known Captain Joe Tangle. He also owned the recently newly reopened Shark Bait and. Tackle in Mastic.
Ray’s fishing origins went back to his days mating on the Viking out of Montauk or on a number of charter boats from Orient Point. He even worked the waters of Peconic Bay for scallops during his commercial fishing tenure. While he was recently known for his specialty in fluking Moriches bay and working the ocean reefs for tog, cod and sea bass, he was also a respected surf rat for many years with the Hampton Bays Surf Club. Ray also was an avid freshwater fisherman and participated in the local freshwater tournament circuit for years.
He leaves behind his young twin boys Frankie and Johnny, along with a large number of friends who had the fortune of fishing with him throughout the years.
Fair winds and following seas, Captain.
