State record alert! It’s official, angler George Barrett has bested a 35-year-old Massachusetts milestone by landing this massive 187-pound, 5-ounce yellowfin tuna on August 1 of this year.
Barrett hooked the record-breaking pelagic during an offshore run to Hydrographer Canyon aboard the MAMA G, under the command of Capt. Jackson Davis. The impressive catch eclipses Mark Bojoukos’ long-standing record of 187 pounds even that had remained unchallenged for over three decades; Bojoukos’ record yellowfin was landed August 5, 1990 somewhere south of Nantucket. It’s hard not to make something out of the fact that Barrett’s record was landed just 4 days shy of being boated 31 years to the day after the previous record was caught! If you want a big yellowfin, the first week of August seems like a good bet!
The official weigh-in was certified at M&D Outfitters – Bait and Tackle in Wareham, securing Barrett’s place in the Bay State fishing record books. Will this one stand for another 30 years? We’ll just have to wait and see!
