Massachusetts Updates Trout Regulations

State wildlife managers have rolled out a few updates to trout bag limits and updated how the law views “possession” on the water, giving anglers more flexibility while offering better protection for wild fish populations. Under the updated trout regulations, anglers can now harvest a total of six trout per day statewide, year-round, on all waters (except those subject to special regulations).

However, there is a species breakdown designed to protect sensitive wild populations. Of those six fish, no more than three can be a combination of brook, brown, or tiger trout. The remaining portion of your daily limit may only be made up of rainbow trout. This framework gives wild brookies and browns an extra layer of protection while still allowing folks to take home plenty of trout for dinner.

Alongside the species split, the state introduced their new definition of “possession” as it pertains to freshwater fishing. Previously, hitting your daily bag limit meant you had to stop fishing. Under the new rules, once you reach your legal daily limit, you are free to keep fishing on a catch-and-release basis as long as any additional trout are released.

These changes are designed to balance resource conservation with plenty of opportunity for anglers across the Commonwealth. Whether you are looking to put a fresh meal of rainbow trout on the table or spend the whole afternoon catching and releasing, these updated guidelines will ultimately lead to more time spent fishing, and that can’t be a bad thing!
