MAXIMA ULTRAGREEN MONO LINE - The Fisherman

MAXIMA ULTRAGREEN MONO LINE

Ultragreen is one of Maxima’s most popular monofilament products and has been the “go-to” line of serious anglers around the world for decades. I have been using Maxima line and leader materials since my college days and some of my most memorable catches of makos, bigeyes and punishing medium and mini-giant bluefin tuna have come with Ultragreen spooled on my lever drag reels. Its trademark strength is one of its major attributes. From big game sharks, tuna and billfish to small lake bass, pike and pickerel, Maxima Ultragreen features outstanding abrasion resistance, knot security and overall tensile strength that holds up to punishing runs from gamefish of all sizes.

Maxima Ultragreen’s moss green color is nearly invisible in the water, making it both an ideal main running line and leader material as well. I typically keep tag end spools of 60-pound and 80-pound Ultragreen handy on my MarCeeJay for retying wind-on leaders when out on a charter. It’s a snap to add a top-shot or wind-on using a Bristol knot, which is one of the most secure and easiest connections when attaching a leader to your reel’s super braid running line.

%pullstart%A staple of inshore and offshore anglers ever since I broke into the saltwater scene back in the early ’70s, Maxima fishing line has set the competitive bar at a high level and is still on top of its game.%pullend%

Maxima Ultragreen mono’s diameter is similar with many in its competitive peer group. The diameter of 60-pound Ultragreen is 0.031 inches. Compare this to Berkley’s ProSpec 60-pound at 0.030 inches; Hi-Seas Quattro Plus at 0.031 inches and Ande Ghost 60 at 0.031 inches, and the consistency of these popular choices is apparent. Ultragreen passed my “9 knots to Know” acid test, with A-ratings tying the Improved Clinch, Palomar, Snell, Dropper Loop, Blood Knot, Improved Surgeons, Albright, Spider Hitch and my all-time fave the Bristol knot. All of the knots cinched up well with just a little bit of saliva and formed perfect shapely connections every time with minimal friction, sticking or hang-ups.

Maxima Ultragreen is offered in a variety of sizes and line strengths, but I find that the larger spools are more useful, plus they don’t form compressed coils like the smaller sizes that are a real pain to deal with. Ultragreen is available in handy pocket-sized leader wheels (1- to 40-pound test); 110-yard mini packs (1- to 50-pound test); one-shot 220-, 250-, and 280-yard spools (1- to 40-pound test); 660-yard maxi spools (4- to 60-pound test); 1,100-yard XB service spools (30-, 50-, 60-, 80-, 130-pound test); and full sized service spools (2- to 180-pound test).

Something tells me that as long as there are saltwater fish to catch, Maxima’s Ultragreen will be out there catching them.
