When any adult angler sees pictures of kids enjoying the sport of fishing, there is a quote that nearly all of us – involuntarily – utter: “That’s what it’s all about”. I hear it all the time at shows, and I hear it in the moment when a young angler catches a fish. Another phrase that often comes from seeing kids out fishing with their dad or mom or uncle or grandfather is, “that’s parenting done right!” Looking deeper into these phrases, they really do embody a core of truth. Seeing children getting out there to enjoy our great sport really is what it’s all about and the spark that lights that fire begins with the parents. When we (as parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts or friends) make time to take our little ones fishing, (or simply allow them to go with someone else) we’re giving them something that has the potential to stretch far beyond the thrill of that first catch, or that first personal best. Fishing often grows into a love or obsession that sticks with us through our entire lives and fills that life with memories and experiences that can’t be replicated with anything else. So do your part, and get those little ones off the tablet and out there in the wild where those beginnings of mystery and wonder can weave into a common thread that lasts a lifetime.
Brothers Mason and Gavin Lawrence put on quite a show with the stripers aboard Reel Cast Charters running out of Old Lyme, CT; that’s a pair of solid fish right there! |
