If you want to put multiple 600s on the back of your 40, 50 or 60-footer, Mercury’s 600 Verado is the only show in town, and you better reserve your spot on line quickly if you want to see one anytime soon. With the brute strength, mass and displacement of a V12 powerhead, the 600 Verado outboard delivers extraordinary range and performance to take your boating adventures to new destinations. Revolutionary advancements in handling and control are made possible by the outboard segment’s first steerable gearcase and an industry-first two-speed transmission. Quiet, smooth and refined, this is the engine that elevates the standards of premium design and engineering.
The outboard segment’s first V12, 7.6-liter powerhead delivers superior horsepower and performance in a surprisingly compact footprint. Combined with the steerable gearcase and simple, streamlined rigging, the design allows the engine to mount on 27-inch centers, so boaters can fit as much power as they need on the transom.
The two-speed transmission makes easy work of transferring 600hp to the gearcase. It doles out maximum torque and acceleration in first gear then silently shifts to second for efficient cruising and thrilling top speed. No shift clunk. No limitations. Only smooth, impressive power.
Electro-hydraulic controls allow the steerable gearcase to react instantly to driver commands. With no movement from the engine above water, there are no distractions, only precise maneuverability around docks and smooth, effortless handling in open water.
A new series of dual props were designed to harness the full potential of 600hp. Designed to run in a contra-rotating configuration, the new propellers power the boat on plane swiftly and efficiently, while delivering exceptional handling and fuel economy at midrange speeds.
A more rugged, more refined next-generation Advanced MidSection (AMS) mounting system cradles the powerhead to isolate noise and vibration, while careful tuning dampens induction sounds and nearly eliminates injection noise.
The performance-inspired quad-cam design is tuned to power big boats out of the hole and over the swell. Even at midrange, you’ll experience instant acceleration and an exhilarating boost the moment you lean into the throttle. Unlike some competitive outboards, the 600 Verado V12 is calibrated to deliver its 600 sea ponies using readily available 87-octane gas.
Relative Fuel Economy
Factory tests at Merc’s top-secret Lake-X facility pitted a competitor’s triple 425hp V8s against a pair of Merc’s V12s with some interesting results. Tested on identical 43-foot, 22,000-pound day boats, the Mercury 600 Verado netted 20 percent better fuel economy at identical cruising speeds and 24 percent better fuel economy at top speed, employing twin 600hp outboards versus the triple 425hp setup from a leading competitor. The Merc 600 Verado also was able to achieve 15 percent faster cruising speeds at best cruise MPG levels and was up to 30 percent quieter. How does this translate from the test lab to the real world? A recent factory test of a Scout outfitted with twin Verado 600s demonstrated that the boat/engine combination had almost linear fuel economy from 4000 to 5000 RPMs, getting a steady 0.8 mpg in this power band, and cruising at 34.3 mph at 4000 RPM; 41.3 mph at 4500; and 46.5 mph at 5000. Maxing out the electric throttles, top speed was 61.9-mph at 6410 RPM. That is really moving for a 20,000-pound luxury family sport fisher!
Extended Maintenance Intervals
Mercury changed the way the marine industry thinks about maintenance. The V12 Verado outboard can run for 200 hours between oil changes and benefits from the protection and performance enhancement of Mercury’s 10W-30 full synthetic marine engine oil. Mercury’s premium power steering and automatic transmission fluids were developed alongside the V12 Verado outboard to provide maximum lubricity and performance, even in extreme conditions. An innovative top cowl service hood makes servicing critical components a snap wherever you are on the water, without having to haul out the boat. Plus, the entire top cowl doesn’t have to come off to allow more in-depth maintenance until 1,000 hours or five years of operation. With hassle-free maintenance and the backing of an extensive global service network, you have the freedom to travel farther and stay out longer than ever before. A Mercury three-year limited warranty is standard, but owners can add up to five additional years of optional coverage with Mercury Product Protection.
