Whenever our team heads to ICAST to check out the latest product releases, we find that many manufacturers are unveiling items which won’t hit tackle stores until early the following year. That was the case during the summer of 2024 when we paid a visit to the P-Line booth for the full scoop on their new PelagX fluorocarbon leader material which was set for release in early 2025. Some of the early reports in on this new fluoro are pretty solid, with The Fisherman’s publisher Mike Caruso telling me he’s used P-Line PelagX on a few tautog trips over the past several months, describing it as “super clear” with “noticeable abrasion resistance qualities.” There are a lot of fluoro options on the market today, but the engineering team at P-Line developed PelagX line with an eye on strength and durability when targeting tough fish, and for sure tautog checks those boxes!
Engineered using the highest quality Japanese raw materials and extrusion technology, P-Line PelagX was created to stand up to a rather unforgiving saltwater environment, with slow pitch and deep drop fishing being a couple of major motivators in the overall design. “This is something that we’ve been working on for about 4 years,” Tom Kanemoto told us at ICAST ’24, adding “After years of testing we now have something that breaks in at 130-thousand pounds per square inch, which is an extremely, extremely high-end fluorocarbon leader material.”
Kanemoto said it’s all about the clarity, the abrasion resistance, and the strength on knots that sets PelagX apart from other options. P-Line PelagX is available in 20- to 200-pound test, with the 20- to 80-pound lines available in 50-yard wrist spools, and the 100- to 200-pound lines on 30-yard wrist spools. The Japanese market has produced some truly leading edge jigging technology in recent years, and a lot of anglers have been keeping an eye on that overseas fishery for new tackle.
