St Croix Avid Surf

Being a surfcaster I would have to say that I’m stuck in my ways to a degree. Anyone that knows or is a surfcaster knows the truth to this. Sometimes were the hardest types of fisherman to convince new gear, lures, rods, reels and techniques to. We often get too comfortable and forget that technology is always improving.

Within the last year St. Croix released the New Avid Surf series. The blank remained the same with the exception of the red paint on it. . I believe the use of no paint on the blank made the Avid more moderate, giving it a more desirable action for surfcasters along the striper coast.

This series got a total makeover. Giving it a brand new updated look. Fuji K-Series KW tangle-free guides with Alconite rings and Corrosion Control in matte grey finish allow braided lines to flow effortlessly while having extreme durability in harsh saltwater conditions. Cork wraps on this rod provide the grip needed when fishing in the surf and the Fuji DPS Deluxe reel seat with back stop lock nut prevents a reel from loosening while in use.

Aside from the beautiful looks of the new models, the rod is an absolute powerhouse that will tame any striped bass or bluefish around. My personal favorite is the 10-foot model that’s rated 1-4 ounces. It is light enough in weight where I can cast it all night but if I happen to hook into a cow bass in raging current, the rod has plenty of power to get that fish in for a quick release.

I’ve have a few insistences where I was catching monster bluefish on topwater. I thought I’d be outgunned due to the current plus the size of the fish but to my surprise this rod turned these fish easily unlike other rods I have.

The St Croix Avid Surf has broken is way into this picky surfcasters arsenal and continues to beat expectations on several occasions.
