Fluke fishing along the South Shore of the island has been one of the stars in our reports section. A good body of fish has settled inside the bays from the western reaches of the island, from Jamaica Bay and all the way out to the east end of the island, in Shinnecock Bay. While the minimum fluke size increased for this season to 19 inches for the first half (May 4 – August 1) and will see a bump again to 19-1/2 inches (August 2 – October 15), anglers have had no problem putting plenty of fluke in their coolers by the end of most trips. The good fluke fishing should continue throughout the month and the body of fish could see a shift towards the eastern end of the island, including Montauk. This might be the time to plan out your Montauk fluke fishing excursions for the month of August.
