Don’t forget that Rhode Island is the only state in the Northeast whose freshwater fishing license does not expire on January 1. In the Ocean State, freshwater licenses expire when trout season officially closes (March 1) ahead of opening day on April 9th. Anglers should be aware that their licenses are officially expired and need to be renewed as of March 1 and that fishing in any of the state’s ‘trout stocked waters’ is prohibited from March 1 through opening day. Failure to follow these rules can result in a citation or even the confiscation of gear. Consider yourselves warned.
