South Shore Surf Fishing Classic - The Fisherman

South Shore Surf Fishing Classic

Hosted by The Fisherman and Long Island State Parks and sponsored by Captree Bait & Tackle and Tsunami, the South Shore Surf Fishing Classic is slated for October 23 through 25. Fishing kicks off at noon Friday, and continues through Sunday at noon. There will be no awards ceremony due to Covid-19, but goody bags will be distributed to the first 100 participants who line up to receive their bag via a drive-through process beginning at 12 noon. The bags include two Tsunami plugs and a Tsunami Bucktail. Winners are asked to stop by Captree Bait & Tackle at noon to receive their awards and photos.

The entry fee is $15 and you can enter in-person up until 9 a.m. on Saturday. It goes without saying that you must be entered prior to checking in any fish. Boundary lines are the Jones Beach West End Two Jetty to the east jetty of Moriches Inlet. New striped bass regulations this season require that only fish measuring from 28 to 35 inches may be entered in the contest. Prizes are based on the three largest fish that fall within the slot. The minimum size for bluefish is set at 5 pounds. There is no Striped Bass Release Division this year due to the difficulty in acquiring prizes as a result of product shortages resulting from the pandemic, and the desire to minimize the handling of large striped bass during any weighing or measuring process. There are three places in the Striped Bass and Bluefish divisions. Winners of the striped bass and bluefish categories will receive $750. Second and third place winners will receive tackle prizes. In the case of a tie, the earliest fish checked in will take priority.
