One of their latest additions to the marketplace exemplifies this trend. The Shield Spinning Reel was introduced at the end of last year and is rapidly gaining popularity among surfcasters and inshore anglers. The reel is currently available in 3000, 4000, 5000 and 6000 sizes. Why all of the fuss about these reels? How about a sealed spinning reel priced at around the $100-mark? The 5000 and 6000 models feature 13 internal seals, including the drag, clutch bearing, side plates and sealed ball bearings. The 3000 and 4000 models contain 10 internal seals.
Obviously, this is not a high end and it would not be fair to expect it to be at approximately 15 percent of the cost. But talk about incredible value for the price! These reels are not made to be fished underwater, but they will withstand the occasional dunking and ward off drenching spray. I had the opportunity to field test a 5000 model on some gator size bluefish to 15 pounds and was impressed with the smooth running carbon fiber drag system. I also found the oversized ball handle comfortable and easy to grip while fighting fish.
According to Cameron Hughes of Bimini Bay Outfitters, the reel’s body is constructed of die cast aluminum, while the spool, rotor and side plates are constructed of lighter weight machined aluminum. Surf fishermen will be pleased to know that the 5000 and 6000 models feature a rotor brake to prevent the bail from closing and snapping off $20 plugs. All models feature reversible left and right hand retrieve, and there is talk of a manual conversion kit coming down the road for the larger models.
Although they have only been around for a short period of time, and it is premature to say whether they will stand the test of time, I like their odds, and for 100 bucks how can you go wrong?
