COMMENT ON NY’S FORGE POND ACCESS

The NY State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is planning to reconstruct and expand the existing DEC fishing access and boat ramp site at Forge Pond in Riverhead. The update will include a loading dock, new concrete ramp, handicapped accessible walkway, plus a dock for launching canoes and kayaks. The parking area will be expanded from the present 10 spots to 15 and automatic solar-powered lighting will be added to illuminate the area when it is used after dark.

The proposal also details clear cutting of approximately one-half acre of adjacent upland oak pine forest for expansion of the river access parking area. The clear cutting activity is located within 535 feet of a documented breeding pond for the endangered Tiger salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum) species. As mitigation for the loss of upland habitat in the vicinity of this tiger salamander pond, an additional pond will be constructed near the edge of the 1,000 foot radius of the existing pond. The project is not expected to have a significant impact on the environment.

The entire revamp is expected to be completed next spring but now is the time for public comments – which must be submitted in writing to the DEC no later than this Thursday, 04/04/201. Email your comments to Eugene R. Zamojcin: [email protected] or call the DEC at 631-444-0365 for further details.
