HUGE BROWN TROUT LANDED - The Fisherman

HUGE BROWN TROUT LANDED

As we approach the seasonal opening of trout season across the Northeast, word is spreading of an oversized catch made by an angler in the Southern Hemisphere.

A New Zealand TV news channel is reporting a potential new world record brown was recently caught by local angler, Otwin Kandolf. The mammoth fish taped out at 36.6 inches and weighed an amazing 42 pounds, 1 ounce. The fish was hooked while fishing a canal and it is speculated that the fish attained such large proportions by feeding on food pellets that drifted down from the salmon farm situated a short distance upstream.

Kandolf was quoted as saying, “The fish was very ugly… small head and very big belly” when asked about the fish. A quick look at the images circulating of his catch back up his feelings, yet many anglers find such a fish beautiful in its own unique way. I’ll leave the final call to you.

The fish is being certified as the New Zealand record for brown trout and has been submitted to the IGFA as a potential new World Record fish as it eclipses Roger Hellen’s 41-pound, 8-ounce trout that was landed in Lake Michigan in July of 2010. Whether the fish is certified as a new World Record or not, the bar has been set exceptionally high for the coming season!

As always we will keep you updated as this story develops.
