Rich from Dick’s B&T said albies are beginning to pop up around the rocks at Moriches, so anglers should keep a small tin or epoxy jig ready in case they suddenly appear. Some striped bass are being caught down near the bottom on bucktails, along with bigger bluefish. Smaller blues have generally been feeding higher in the water column. The Smith Point stretch is still producing sharks and rays on chunk baits, while bucktails worked from the surf continue to pick away at fluke. Triggerfish are also still hanging around the rocks. Back in the creeks, snapper poppers are accounting for plenty of snappers along with some cocktail bluefish.

In from Richie at Dick's B&T in Mastic Beach we learned the week was good with plenty of fluke, and the keeper ratio picked up this week. Several anglers reported more keepers in the bay and on the outside. Buoys 14 and 15, East and West cuts. From 10 feet of water outside the bar to the Moriches reef has also produced a better ratio of keepers. Sea bass and ling life on the reef is very good too. Larger sea bass are on the deeper wrecks, with the 60 to 130-foot depths producing tuna in the 20 to 50-pound class, with some really big ones hooked and spooled on jigs. Albies are running the inlet area and ocean, so have a spinning rod at the ready. Triggerfish are along the West Jetty and inlet holes. Inside the bay, the bottom is covered in blowfish, with some larger ones in the mix. Clam chum and clam or squid will account for triggerfish and blowfish. On the docks and piers, the snapper action is great, with cocktail blues in the mix. Snapper poppers, spearing and a float or small tins work well. Live snappers will account for larger blues…fish them on the bottom on a fish finder rig.

Rich from Dick’s B&T reported some big bluefish around the rocks at the west jetty of Moriches Inlet. He said some of the larger fish have been holding closer to the bottom, while smaller blues have been feeding higher in the water column, making diamond jigs and bucktails good choices for covering both zones. Striped bass action inside the inlet is also starting to pick up. Along Smith Point, anglers are finding some bluefish and the occasional striper, while fluke fishing off the open sand has been good with bucktail-and-teaser rigs tipped with Gulp. The docks around the Narrows are holding plenty of snapper blues, with spearing fished below floats producing steady action, and some fluke are also being caught near the Smith Point Bridge.

In from Richie at Dick's B&T in Mastic Beach the report was of a good week of action. Buoys 14 and 15 and the east and West cuts have been the best spots. Outside the inlet, anglers drifting from the mouth all the way to the reef also reported good action. Mike Bullock got out several days and had 20 to 30 fish one day, with two keepers. Dave Lopez weighed in a 6.7-pound fluke, and said he had a load of shorts too. Pat Walsh fished the reef area for two keepers of 20 and 22 inches along with a mess of sea bass. Blues have been showing up at the inlet daily with most 2 to 5 pounds and a few to 10 as well. Tuna action remained good in close with football size bluefins the bite. At the docks, crabbing and snappers remain very good.
