Chris from the Montauk Anglers Club reported this week proved to be one of the greatest early seasons Montauk seen in a very long time. With cod plentiful, and blackfish galore it was a bottom fisherman’s dream come true. Montauk Anglers Club had green crabs, anglers that loaded up caught cod and blackfish on them. In the surf, some of the most prolific striped bass fishing was had from the lighthouse to ditch Plains. Slot-sized and overshot fish patrolled the trough eating a variety of lures from bucktails to bass assassins. Anglers also had some keeper-sized stripers along the East Hampton stretch, to the west of them. Blackfish have made a move to the north side of the point in the shallows and were chomping on soft baits like clam but crabs worked as well. Shrimp and spearing have been the main baits in the area according to Chris.
