At the Montauk Anglers Club, resident sharpie Chris Albronda reported this week anglers found that the walleye and smallmouth were very active. A suspending or slow rising jerkbait was a guarantee. While night fishing, a local guide on the lake caught an American eel that was nearly 4-feet long, a smallmouth, one of the largest bluegills Fort Pond has seen, crappie, and carp. Fishing has been really good!

Will from the Montauk Anglers Club reported a noticeably better fluke bite around the Radio Tower, where they recently weighed in impressive fish of 10 and 11 pounds. Cartwright, Frisbees and Shagwong have also been producing good fluke action, with strip baits, squid and spearing combinations, along with Gulp, all getting the job done. Sea bass fishing has remained consistent around Cartwright and Frisbees. Some larger bluefish are also mixing in with the smaller cocktails around the Point and stretching down the north side, where popping plugs and tins have been productive. Tuna fishing was slower overall during the past week, but plenty of mahi are still holding around floating debris and other structure south of the Point.

At the Montauk Anglers Club, the guys sent me over to resident sharpie Chris Albronda for the weekly report. The shop is stocked with freshwater gear, so before heading out, stop by. Chris reported this week was all about trolling 1.5 to 2.5 knots. Anglers using the Rapala husky jerks and shadow raps caught every species Fort Pond has to offer, Chris did a fluorocarbon test and found the best bites came on 6-pound as the top shot. Sharp turns always triggered a bite. The catch of the weekend was a 5-pound smallmouth…which is huge! The fish also gave the angler a aerieal display, flipping and jumping. The weekend was capped off by targeting XL carp in the phragmites using bread for good action.

Will from the Montauk Anglers Club reported that fluking is picking up along the north side around Shagwong. Sea bass action is also improving around the Point, along the south side and over the Frisbees and Cartwright grounds. Bluefish are showing along the north side on just about every turn of the tide, with some fish pushing 13 pounds and a few random striped bass mixed into the schools. Offshore, the bluefin jig-and-pop bite remains hot around the Habs in 115 to 140 feet of water. RonZs and UVTs have been getting plenty of attention. Chicken mahi have also appeared around floating debris, while smaller skipjacks are feeding on sand eels in the Habs area.
