Paulie's Tackle

January 18, 2021 - 10:35:42

Nick from Paulie’s Tackle in Montauk chatted with me about freshwater fishing. He has been taking advantage of the good fishery Long Island has to offer by targeting yellow perch at the lakes. Small lures and soft plastics are getting good responses from these critters.

Nick from Paulie’s Tackle in Montauk told me fishing in Montauk is still limited to getting on a boat for cod. Up island, he’s been picking away at the typical small holdover stripers and white perch. He said small swimming plugs worked well for the bass and tiny soft plastics were used for the perch.

Nick from Paulie’s Tackle in Montauk told me fishing in Montauk is very slim unless you wanted to jump on a boat for cod. Mid-Island he’s been doing well with white perch and holdover schoolies on small jigs and swimming plugs.

Nick from Paulie’s Tackle in Montauk told me that fishing has been quiet in Montauk. He had a friend who got out during the week and fished the waters around Block Island for a slow pick at cod and sea bass. He believes most of the fish have moved offshore now.

December 21, 2020 - 11:06:15

Paul from Paulie’s Tackle in Montauk reported all is quiet at the tip of the Island but he plans to remain open through the end of the year. The final results of the Montauk Surfmasters Fall Tournament saw Mike Coppola claim the top spot for his 44 pounder caught on October 9 on the south side. The winning fish took a black Super Strike Bottle Plug. On the same night, but on the north side, Brandon Sausele found a 30 pounder, good enough to nail down second place. Mary Ellen took third place with a 12-pound fish, the only one entered into the tournament for the wader division.

Nick from Paulie’s Tackle in Montauk told me blackfishing was still decent in Montauk but the boats are running deeper by Block Island. He reminded me that the season is open until December 22nd. The shop will be open all winter with limited hours.

I spoke to Paul at Paulie's Tackle and he said the Montauk beaches had no shortage of schoolie bass. At some times the fishermen had fish every cast on the sand beaches. His son Nick got in on some of that local action Saturday. Blackfish has still been good for the boats heading out. The shop will be open all year building/fixing rods and repairing reels. This is a good time of the year to get your gear in order.

November 23, 2020 - 09:37:22

Paul from Paulie’s Tackle in Montauk reported there are still plenty of stripers at the Point, although an abundance of seals has slowed the action on the north side. The best fishing has been from the Point, as far west as you want to travel on the sand beaches. Bucktails, metals, needlefish and teasers are taking the bulk of the fish. The shop will be closed for Thanksgiving but will remain open through the end of the year.

November 16, 2020 - 09:35:04

Paul from Paulie’s Tackle in Montauk reported a lot of bass and some blues out in the rips but not on the beach every day. Not a lot of guys fishing the Point now so reports are getting harder to come by. He did have some good reports from the sand beach along Amagansett and East Hampton this week, and as recently as Saturday. The shop will remain open through the end of the year.

November 09, 2020 - 09:44:00

Paul from Paulie’s Tackle in Montauk reported a lot of school size stripers popping up along the points north side, south side, up front and on the sand beaches through Amagansett and Napeague. Fish are being caught day and night from Shagwong around to the south side. Paul Sharpe flyrodded the fish at Shagwong and North Bar this week. Bucktails and metals are working good during the day and on the sand. At night, bucktails, swimming plugs, needlefish, darters and bottle plugs have all been effective.

November 02, 2020 - 16:02:03

Paul from Paulie’s Tackle in Montauk reported sporadic blitzes of schoolie bass along the north side from the light to North Bar. The sand beaches saw good action this week from Napeague, west to Easthampton on bucktails and metals. In the Montauk Surfmasters Tournament, Mike Coppola remains in 1st place with a 44-pound bass, followed by Brandon Sausele with a 30 pounder. Third place is being held down by Mary Ellen Kane with a 12 pounder that puts her in 3rd place in the overall division and first place in the wader division. Mike and Brandon lead the wetsuit division.

October 26, 2020 - 09:49:21

Paul from Paulie’s Tackle in Montauk reported sporadic action up front and on the north and south sides. Some very good action when the fish move in, otherwise kind of quiet. The rips are absolutely loaded with schoolies and some slot fish and some captains are saying it’s the most bass they have seen during the fall in years. The sand beaches from Hither Hills through Easthampton came alive on Saturday morning with very good numbers of bass taking bucktails and metals.

October 19, 2020 - 09:50:01

Paul from Paulie’s Tackle in Montauk reported another crazy week of action with a steady diet of daytime blitzes scattered along the north and south sides and up front. Most of the daytime action has been on bucktails. At night, darters, needlefish and bucktails are all effective. Some quality fish are mixed with lots of schoolies. Brandon Sausale culled a 30 pounder from the north side and Mike Coppola racked up a 40 pounder on the south side.

October 12, 2020 - 10:13:09

Paul from Paulie’s Tackle in Montauk reported a solid week of action with frequent blitzes of bass when the water wasn’t browned up from all the wind. Fishing up front and under the light has been very consistent. It was very good on Friday night as Matt Broderick racked up a bunch of bass to 25 pounds on bucktails. Paulie’s son Nick scored a bunch of bass at Browns, also Friday night. Shagwong saw blitzes of school bass on Friday and Saturday afternoons. Lynnie Savino and myself got into them on Saturday and had a ball catching the fish on 6-foot rods and 10-pound test. Albies were at the mouth of the harbor on Friday.

October 05, 2020 - 09:53:08

Paul from Paulie’s Tackle in Montauk reported a decent showing of bass on Friday and Saturday nights under the light, and on the north and south sides. The fish were taken on bucktails, darters and needlefish plugs. Montauk’s sand beaches have been relatively quiet, but the albie bite at the harbor entrance has been fairly consistent.
