The Saltwater Edge

Over at The Saltwater Edge they have been hearing reports of slower fishing for striped bass as we are now getting into the typical summer doldrums. There are still a good number of bass around, they are just harder to catch, and the best bite is often taking place at night with live eels. Bottom fishing is holding up well for fluke and especially black sea bass where more keepers seem to be moving into the area. Fishing for scup has also been producing well. There have been reports of some green bonito showing up around the islands and along the beaches and there are plenty of mackerel around. Offshore, the weather offered limited opportunities this past week and reports of inshore bluefin remain slow for recreational anglers.

Over at The Saltwater Edge customers continue to do well targeting bottom fish around the islands and the mouth of the bay. Fishing for black sea bass and scup is very good right now and is an easy way to bring home some fresh fish for the table. Your classic bottom rigs tipped with squid or clams will produce well if anchored and metal of bucktail jigs are great on the drift. Fluke reports are also holding up pretty well with some nice sized keepers being reported around the bridges. Fishing for striped bass is becoming more of a night game, but you can still pick up a few during the day especially with live bait. At night, casting live eels into the boulder fields or three-waying them over deeper structure is tough to beat. The inshore fishery for bluefin tuna has been a little slow the last couple of weeks after a decent start, but the canyon fishing continues to produce well for yellowfin, bigeye and bluefin tuna.
