The Saltwater Edge

Over at The Saltwater Edge they held their annual Striper Kickoff and Surf Expo on Saturday and there was a lot of discussion around when the first migratory striped bass would arrive in Rhode Island. So far, there have been reports of holdover striped bass being caught in tidal rivers and salt ponds, but fresh lice cover fish have yet to arrive. A few anglers have been getting out and trying for tautog, but reports have been slow so far. Trout fishing opened back up in Rhode Island on Saturday, and fishing was reported to be very good. Fishing for largemouth bass and pike has also been producing some nice fish.

Chris at The Saltwater Edge said that he has been hearing reports of some good-sized holdover striped bass being caught around the herring runs in the rivers and salt ponds. The holdovers are feeding heavily on herring and white perch and larger soft plastics worked slowly along the bottom are producing well. A few anglers have been trying for tautog and even though the water is still cold, a few fish are being caught. In freshwater, the local lakes and ponds are fishing well for good-sized largemouth bass on swimming plugs, glide baits, and soft plastics. Crappie fishing has also been productive. This upcoming week, trout fishing will reopen in Rhode Island waters and fishing is sure to be very good with plenty of freshly stocked trout in area lakes, ponds and rivers. On April 11th, they will be holding their annual Striper Kickoff and Surf Expo. The event kicks off at 9 a.m. with a plug show, which is free to attend, followed by an instructional Surf Expo which starts and 1 p.m. Tickets are required for the Surf Expo and can be purchased on their website or at the shop.
