The Long Island fishing community is coming together to offer hope and assistance to those in need following Hurricane Sandy. For those who have lost so much, perhaps a day of fishing will help relieve the burden for a little while. Captain Desi O’Sullivan of the Port Jefferson open boat Celtic Quest has decided to make sure that all who need such a break have the opportunity. Please understand that this offer is intended for those who have been through the proverbial mill, not those who have simply lost electircity or suffered comparatively minor inconveniences. We hope Captain O’Sullivan’s offer will be received in the spirit it was intended and that those who need it most are the ones that are served.
When I spoke with Captain O’Sullivan, he mentioned that many people have offered to pay the fares incurred by guests of this program, or have offered to contribute toward the cost of gas, bait, etc. He has politely declined all such offers and suggested that those who would like to contribute in some way simply make a donation to the Red Cross or a similar helpful organization.
Captain O’Sullivan’s press release runs below. We encourage you to pass it on to someone who could really use a day on the water.
In case you are wondering, the boat has been targeting blackfish and the action has been super since the hurricane – but there is no way of knowing how long such great action will last. If you want to get out, I’d suggest going as soon as you can find the time. Call ahead and make a reservation first and then get ready to have some fun. This is the kind of fishing that can really brighten your day.
FREE FISHING ON THE CELTIC QUEST FOR VICTIMS OF SANDY
We are all deeply saddened by the countless stories of devastation from Hurricane Sandy. The stories keep coming in from fishing customers who have to cancel their trips due to the incredible hardships created by this storm. Our hearts and prayers continue to go out to you all.
%pullstart%"If it is of any help, we would like to offer anyone who has been badly hurt by this storm free fishing for the rest of the season."%pullend%If it is of any help, we would like to offer anyone who has been badly hurt by this storm free fishing for the rest of the season. Though obviously there are many more important things to take care of first, like finding adequate shelter and heat, if the time comes when a day on the water could be of any comfort and you would just like to get away from it all for a day, please know you are welcome to come for free, no questions asked.
Obviously, most of us were/are without power and phone, etc., and have been affected by the storm, but some have lost so much more…
If you or your family are struggling to get by right now due to the storm, just tell the crew you would like to come for free due to the storm and we will trust you have a reason. We will comp your fares or fares and you won’t have to explain.
Should anyone decide to take advantage of this offer who really isn’t experiencing hardship….well, what can we say. We will leave that up to you decide. That’s something you, and you only, will have to live with.
Be strong everyone. Where there is a will there is a way! And if a day of fishing can help ease the burden of this hard road, the please know you are always welcomed.
Hope to see you at the rail!
