LEARN TO BE A DECKHAND

It’s that time again—back by popular demand is Deck Tech University presented by the crew of the Black Hawk. Classes will once again be held at Connecticut Outfitters, located at 512 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield, CT. The classes will meet on four dates from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. each day: Tuesday, March 12; Wednesday, March 13; Tuesday, March 19; and Wednesday, March 20.

The classes will cover the basics for those who would like to be a "Deck Technician" on a party boat like the Black Hawk, a charter boat, or even just want to gain some knowledge for their own boats. Among the many topics we will cover:

  • Preparing for a trip
  • Where to fish
  • Equipment used on the boat
  • Maintenance of equipment/ tools on a boat
  • Safety on the boat
  • Basic fishing information
  • Customer Service on a boat
  • Party boat fishing skills- nets, gaffs, filleting, etc.
  • And lots more!

Each participant in the class will receive:

  • 12 hours of training from experienced captains and deckhands
  • A new pair of pliers for use on the boat
  • A certificate of completion
  • A shift as an active deckhand working alongside the crew of the Black Hawk on a 6 hour fishing trip on Long Island Sound (dates/times to be arranged with the captain)
