New England - South Shore Massachusetts to Maine Fishing Reports

Tog Action Heats Up in Rhode Island & Mass!
There’s a lot going on right now in New England fishing. The tog bite has been heating up in a hurry across southern Massachusetts, and Rhody has been putting out great catches with lots of keepers and a few double-digits as well. The fish have been relatively shallow too, mostly 30 feet or less. Striper action is also cooking right along with the first 30-pounders reported in Connecticut and Rhode Island and schoolies reaching the New Hampshire border. Beyond these things, we have great largemouth bass fishing again this week and trout fishers continue to crush it throughout the region.

The first schools of migrating stripers have arrived along south shore and can be found in many of the local marshes and rivers. Most of the first arrivals are school sized fish up to about 22 inches, but schools of larger sized stripers will be moving in to the coastal waters of New England over the next several weeks. Fly fishermen can have a ball on many of these early arrivals. The North or South Rivers in the Scituate to Green Harbor areas had their first decent showing of school stripers this week. By next weekend the new arrivals should be well past Ipswich and up into Southern Maine and into the Saco River. May haddock fishing should remain steady. The early season reports on Jeffrey’s Ledge have been very good with some bigger sized haddock in the mix. As the month progresses and the water continues to warm schools of mackerel will arrive on the offshore ledges and then move inshore along the coastline. Striper and flounder fishing will heat up and the 2024 saltwater fishing season be in full swing.

Captain Rich from Black Rose Fishing Charters was out squid fishing when I spoke with him on Sunday morning. He told me porgy fishing season starts May 1st and offers a great early season opportunity for saltwater fishermen suffering from winter cabin fever. Two trips per day are the routine for you to fill up cooler and go home with a bucket of tasty fish. Looking ahead Captain Rich has plans to start fishing for sea bass Buzzards Bay later in month of May. Haddock fishing is off to a good start as well. Captain Rich predicts they will be moving into more shallow water as the sea temperature warms up a few more degrees.

Seamus from Belsan’s Bait and Tackle told me that fresh migratory stripers have arrived and can be found at the mouth of all the local marshes and rivers. The North River had its first reports of stripers on Sunday. Pete’s early season prediction of the last week in April arrival of the first blast of fresh ocean migrating fish was right on the money, as it usually is. The first batch of stripers are smaller school sized fish, but they are very hungry and very aggressive. More fish will be arriving every day and hopefully striper fishing will be in full swing by next weekend. The haddock season is off to a good start. Fishing reports have been decent but not as robust as last season during the same week. The water is still in the mid 40’s so hopefully this upcoming week the haddock fishing on the inside humps like Stone Ledge will pick up. Ground fishing on Stellwagen Bank and Jeffrey’s Ledges has been good to very good. There have been no reports of flounder in the harbor to date. Fresh water trout fishing is still excellent. The store is open seven days a week.

Martha from Surfland told me the first migratory striper was caught by a boat fisherman off of Plum Island on Sunday morning. The shad fishing has been decent upriver in North Andover in fresh water, however and by next weekend hopefully there will be some shad around Rocks Village. Martha is hopeful and predicting that by next week the first wave of lice covered migrating stripers will swim into the waters off of Plum Island and the Merrimack River. Surfland is now open 7 days a week.
