New York State Environmental Conservation Officers (ECOs) Franz and Pabes recently conducted a striped bass enforcement operation in the Town of North Hempstead following reports of anglers exceeding legal harvest limits at a popular fishing location.
During the patrol, officers seized 19 illegally possessed striped bass and issued 13 tickets to six anglers. Violations included exceeding the daily bag limit, possessing fish outside the legal slot size, using prohibited j-hooks while fishing bait for striped bass, and failing to carry proof of enrollment in the Recreational Marine Fishing Registry.
Current regulations allow anglers to keep one striped bass per person per day measuring between 28 and 31 inches. DEC officials remind anglers that these rules are designed to protect the spawning stock and ensure the long-term sustainability of the fishery.
Anglers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with current regulations before heading out and to ensure they are properly registered under New York’s Recreational Marine Fishing Registry.
