Connecticut is inviting residents and visitors alike to cast a line without breaking the bank this summer, kicking off with the state’s first Free Fishing License Day on Sunday, June 21, 2026. The special event allows anyone to fish in the state’s diverse fresh or saltwater bodies for 24 hours without the need to purchase a license, though all participants aged 16 and older must still obtain a free one-day license through the online Sportsmen Licensing System. These complimentary passes become available three weeks prior to the event, making registration fast and simple for families planning a weekend outing.
To ensure a rewarding experience, Connecticut Fish and Wildlife typically conducts a special round of trout stockings leading up to the event, and updates regarding release locations are posted regularly on their social media channels. While the license itself is free, all participants remain fully bound by Connecticut’s standard fresh and saltwater fishing regulations. Fortunately, great fishing is remarkably accessible in the Constitution State, with trout, bass, pike, panfish, and premier marine species like striped bass, fluke, bluefish, and porgy all located within 25 miles of every resident.
Anglers can brush up on the rules by accessing the digital Connecticut Fishing Guide in English or Spanish online, or by picking up a print version at one of more than 350 locations statewide, including town halls and local bait shops. Children under sixteen can fish for free all year, but young anglers are encouraged to register online for a Youth Fishing Passport. This passport grants access to the year-long Fishing Challenge, making Free Fishing License Day the perfect opportunity for kids to check multiple species off their scorecard.
